I turned a manual budgeting workaround into an App Store product.

Penii began as my way to see where my money would land before I spent it. I turned that calendar habit into a forecast-first iPhone app and launched it without asking for bank access.

Problem

Budgeting apps explained the past. I needed to see what would remain after upcoming paydays, bills, and weekly spending.

  • I rebuilt the same forecast by hand every month.
  • Each change rippled through the days ahead.
  • Bank linking asked for trust before showing value.

The question was simple: “What happens next?”

Solution

Penii turns a balance, income, bills, and a weekly budget into one full-month forecast.

It reserves the weekly budget before it is spent, so purchases within the allowance are not deducted twice. Unused budget returns to the forecast; overspending lowers it.

01. Product evolution

A calendar did what budgeting apps didn’t.

I mapped bills, paydays, weekly spending, and running balances on a paper calendar. It showed what would be left before the month happened, but every change meant recalculating the days ahead.

The workflow became an interface.

The calendar proved the concept. I translated its rules into a responsive web interface that carried balances forward and updated the month automatically.

The workflow became a forecasting product.

The next version added navigation, dashboard patterns, card controls, and daily detail. What started as an automated calendar was now one connected forecasting product.

02. Build

Plan around the spending moment.

For iPhone, I focused on three moments: check what is safe today, see the month ahead, and update the plan while spending.

Build the complete native product.

I rebuilt the forecast for iPhone and owned the work from interface to App Store. It did not need web parity. It needed to be faster, clearer, and trustworthy in daily use.

03. The app

A personal tool became a product built for everyday use.

Penii kept the forecasting model that worked. Guided setup, clearer screens, and quick entry made it useful whenever money decisions happen.

The forecast became an everyday tool.

The dashboard puts today’s balance, weekly budget, upcoming activity, and goals in one view. The month ahead stays clear at a glance.

Make it yours.

Choose a background, rearrange cards, and add widgets from the library so the dashboard fits the way you think about money.

04. Outcome

What changed.

The manual recalculating disappeared. Penii now carries the month forward on an iPhone, wherever the next money decision happens.

What shipped.

I shipped setup, forecasting, personalization, daily planning, and quick expense entry as one App Store product. No bank access required.
